The 2nd Annual Brazos River Cleanup was held on April 2. Our group of 18, was responsible for cleaning up the 5 mile section of river from Hwy 67 to Tres Rios Campground.
Dori and Christie dig in the mud,
while Pat and Lynn search the weeds, for the illusive trash.
Gail and Jean look very relaxed after their early morning swim, but they still aren't quite sure what to do with their paddles.
Lori and Doug stay close to the bank in their quest for trash, while Mitch and Chris cruise the middle of the river hoping the trash will come to them.
With Sarah's guidance, Ben and John demonstrate their whitewater skills.
Kenn tries to impress his mother Jude with his surfing and ferrying skills, but she out does him with her one handed paddling and cross duffek.
Pat and Lynn, still relentlessly hunting down trash, leave the comfort of their canoe and head into the bush.
Christie and Sarah offer up a fish for lunch, but all opt to pass and save room for the barbeque at the campground.
We find our first tire and a conference is convened to decide the best means of extraction.
Latter in the day, Jean and Gail have collected a lot of trash and now look like experienced paddlers.
Sherrie takes a much needed rest, while Dori paddles along.
Apparently Kenn thinks he deserves a rest as well. Kenn, did you learn this skill in Charles's Class?
Shamu fans rejoice. Shamu is alive and well and living in the Brazos River, or could it be just another Shamu impersonator? The orca seems to have an attachment to Janet and Christie or is it just attached to their canoe?
Ben and John risk life and limb to retrieve aluminum siding, while Mitch, Sarah and Chris give encouragement. Chris and Mitch load the big find in their canoe and head to the takeout.
With a mother load of trash in our canoes, tired and dirty, we all race to the takeout eager to feast on barbeque.
A very proud and enthusiastic Cleanup Crew displays the trash that they collected along the Brazos. It is the hope of the volunteers that their effort will make the experiences of other paddlers and visitors to the river more enjoyable.
At the end of the day all of the volunteers relax and enjoy the delicious barbeque lunch. Thanks to all of the volunteers and organizers of this event. Hope to see you there next year.
